Not every story we hear about Vietnam, even from the Vets who served there, are 100% true. Many are recollections and the story is what the person remembered.. and memories are not always what actually occurred, the honest ones are more what that person relating the story thought he saw. The story of our returning soldiers being called "Baby Killers" is true and it happened far more often than some people wish to admit. Soldeirs being spit on, feces thrown at them, rotten fruit and vegetables thrown at them, their families being harassed (especially while the soldier was away), and the general abuse towards our soldiers are true in alot of cases. The fury at the war and those who fought it was high back in the late 60s and 70s. I see that same fury rising today and hope people never allow the war to mar their better sense to that degree, but I am not going to be shocked when (and if) it happens. I've already read and heard far too many rude and ignorant comments made about our soldiers and I've already read stories about the families of soldiers being harassed. Such behaviour is disgusting.

Your comments are good, but were any of you in the war in 'Nam? I was, and it was not a good movie. Some say the iraq war is like nam but how can you have a morass when it's not jungle but sands. No napalm or agent orange needed there. It's like it's already been done. Were any of you in the service? We will prevail in Iraq and it is thanks to the persistence and courage of George Bush, not Americans, the media or the congress.

both OL and I were in the service, mine starting during the VN conflict. Never had one person call me anything or spit at me or nothin during my whole time in service. My brother was in before me and was stabbed by a VC before his time was up. He never got any of that bull when he came home either. That is not to say it didn't happen, but perhaps the animosity was not as great as some make it out to be. Of course, the big hurt was not getting any parades or welcome home events after spending a couple of years doing your duty for the country.

I did not get that reaction either when I came home. I'm sorry you had a big hurt, and for your bro. A lot of trafedies happened over there, and atrocities. Maybe you were in military combat, but let others speak for themselves. Some talk a good game with bravado, data and ya-ya, but were they actually in the military and did they see combat? As I said, we need many more troops in Iraq. What do you think?

You are right, Maddog, not every troop returning was met with a receiving line of hatred and disdain to this level, but this extreme happened far more than people think. Milder forms of disrepect for our returning soldiers were far more frequent, and that includes no receptions of cheering people greeting the planes or boats which the soldiers returned by, no parades of recognition and no "welcome home" functions of any nature which soldiers were given in the past. It was a disgusting time in American history and showed America's all time low.

We got a good welcome home by our friends and families. The media dissed us and that was seen as the first time americans lost a war. We did not. we prevented a much greater rise and foothold of communism in Asia. Have you been in the military and in combat?

Not in combat and speaking like and expert on war and hearsay. You are a fake. Please dont phish and put us on again. Who did you know from different places around the US? What are varying degrees? We need many more troops in iraq and Israel needs to push the Palestiners way back more and help us disarm iran.

How did you reach that conclusion exactly? lol You can't judge that by what I said... let's look and see what transpired, shall we? I said:
"It would be a poorly mannered family and set of friends who would throw rotten eggs at you after returning from a war, doncha theenk?"
You said:
"Did that happen to you?"
I said:
"No, but it happened to many others I knew from different places around the US... and it happened in varying degrees."
lol Too Funny, did you really think I am going to sit here and tell you personal info about myself and others which you do not need to know? Apparently if you were in the military you paid no attention to your security briefings. It is not your business to know the answer to some of the questions you have asked, such as who I know and exactly where I was. My facts speak for themselves and what I say shows I have the knowledge and experience to know what I am talking about. As far as what Varying Degrees mean, that is self explanatory. It means that the degrees varying in accordance with the situation and events. Anyone graduating high school should know that one. I learned it back in the 3rd grade. lol And please quit changing the parameters, this is not about Isreal, It's about Iraq. The Isreali/Palestinian situation is not a part of Iraq. We also are not talking about disarming Iran, Iran is not located in Iraq. We can include pushing the Iranians out of Iraq but the Iranians are not there in force.

I see you don't answer honestly any direct questions. Playing word games, saying what he-she said with no answers. As I said, You were not in combat and speaking like an expert on war and hearsay. You are a fake. Israel is the topic here, and it needs to work with the USA military now to win Iraq and squelch Iran. Bush and Condoleeza know are working on this.

I'll repeat my response, I do answer honestly and directly. When something is not your business, or when something done was not downgraded for security reasons.. I don't tell. That is about as honest as you can get. As far as answering directly? I have where it was warranted. Isreal is not the topic here, junior, read and comprehend. GLWhitely posted this topic and she said:
"Today on The View they wanted to know why there are not more protest against the war in Iraq like there was during Vietnam. PLEASE do not even think about all the protest again. I was around and watched the protest against Vietnam."
Show me where Isreal is any part of her post? I dare you. lol

Why do you support the war in Iraq?

It's simple. The troop in Iraq joined by there own free will. They weren't drafted into the war like in Vietnam. Also the vets from Vietnam don't want our troops treated like they were. People don't like the war but support the troops so they are quiet.

There is no doubt the Vietnam Soldier got the shaft. Not only did they have to face the ignorance of their fellow Americans but it took years, and sometimes decades, to give them what they rightfully deserved. Actually I think it takes one sick individual to actually "like" any war. Many people mistake a person realizing that war is sometimes necessary for that person liking war. This is a wrong assumption on their part. Good Post, BTW. :)

First let's get your boy home. Then let's get the rest of them home. Protest does not have to look like the protests that took place during the VietNam war. Mom's just like you were thrilled to have their sons home. No one is going to ever spit at your son. Your son and all of the young men and women who are caught in this war will be honored and cared for and loved because they are brave young Americans. I pray for them every day and I pray that they come home to their families safe so that they can have a good life and be happy. Our government consists of three branches: Judiciary, Legislative, and Executive. The Executive Branch of the Government currently has too much power. I will think of your son all day today and I will pray that you are hugging him really really soon.

I agree, protests do not have to look like, or be like, many of the protests during the Vietnam War.. now if we can just convince the protesters of that fact. However to say no one is going to ever spit on her son, figuratively or factually, is a statement based upon an unreal conception of how the American Public views the military. Even in the good ole days of the 80s when there were no real wars to speak of, the American Military often put up with verbal abuse by our illustrious brothers and sisters in the civilian world. The image projected by civilians of the military was that they were all low-class scum, just a bunch of drunks running around in uniform molesting women in bars and getting into trouble. As far as our men and women in the service being taken care of.. the government and the organizations which support the military and vet better begin digging for the money now to take proper care of these returning vets while making plans on treating the existing vets properly. To give the Iraqi war vet special care over the Vets they already have is dead wrong.. a vet is a vet is a vet and they all need the proper care... which they will not get because the American Public and our illustrious politicians do not want to fund these organizations properly.
