Did Heinlein write all that?  I had heard the sentence about one man's religion being another's belly laugh, but not the rest.  What book is that from?

Heinlein is probably my favorite fiction author.  I've always loved how he weaves in deep and (for his time) radical notions of politics, philosophy and religion into his works.

Most  ( all?) of the quotes are from a character created by Heinlein named Lazarus Long.

I believe that they are from several books.

Great stuff for sure!  Yes, religions of many flavors are for sale,  for 10-15% of their income, the faithful get a weekly dose of mental reenforcement/confirmation that their future blissful and eternal existence is intact, it's one of the oldest and most successful con jobs ever, one is required to faithfully hold on to their blind faith till death and since on one has ever come back from the dead, there is no way to fully discredit what they've been sold,  the scam has been truly time tested, still works today and will continue to do so in the future.

Religion is a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up to the unknown without help.
---------------------------------
depends on one's definition of religion.

Sounds like an excellent definition of every religion I have ever heard of.

I would say it's pretty much anyone's clear thinking definition of religion... Let's look at your dependency on your bible...started at 14?  I never relied on such nonsense, even though it was pounded into me from before I could speak...  I've had tough talking religious people mess their pants when taken out of their 'norm' and put into a storm at sea,  I never even came close to even wetting my underwear, no matter how terrible the conditions were... Bear is right,  it takes weak people to gang up on others, religions are one of the best and time tested methods of doing so.

Okay, obviously I don;t come here often but what dependency? I started studying the Bible and reading it through but dependency? Naw! By now from the other thread, maybe you have been enlightened a bit, maybe not. I read Karl Marx a few years later but that hardly makes me dependent on the Communist manifesto!  For some of you it is all or nothing, black and white. I have trouble with both extremes because of that!

Well anyway from the title of this thread I take it that true Christians are bowlegged!
