I have always tried to get home on time just to hear World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. There maybe more interesting topics on CBS( my next favorite), but somehow, the remote returns me to Peter. His calm, soothing, insightful voice is what one needs at the end of a long work day. Peter, you will be missed and as for Charlie, he has an enormous pair of shoes to fill. Am I worried? My only problem is, who will fill Charlie's and be just as compatible with Diane and of course, Robin and Tony? ABC, you've got a lot ahead of you. Make it good and in celebration of Peter's life....... Cheers, L. John-Mayers/Miami

I enjoyed watching Bob Woodward tonight and think he would make a great replacement. He came accross as caring, professional, and personable. Quite good to look at as well. Charlie Gibson has done a great job with WNT, but I have come to loathe some the tabloidy, hollywood focused bantering that go on GMA. I stopped watch months ago. Elizabeth Vargas would be my second choice; is just spendid. I am back to watching 20/20.

Please see my vote for Bob Woodruff today at 7:40 p.m. I am delighted that there are othere that see in Mr. Woodruff the same qualities as Peter Jennings.

I've been watching ABC news for years because of Peter! My mother and daughter loved him, too--3 generations of us. Elizabeth is my choice because of the warmth, poise, and professional air she has. Like others, I feel strongly about my opinion. P. S. Mostly, I wanted to thank ABC for the beautiful 2 hours that helped me feel closure, since there's not a service for viewers. I appreciate the beautiful work done in his memory. A grateful West Texas ranch girl.

Bob Woodward is my choice too. He appears proffessional and as it is 'on TV' the charming look part does not hurt either. ABC news is lucky to have him on board and should take advantage of his skills ofill this hard to fill void.

I agree with you. Bob Woodruff would be a great choice as Peter's successor. I've noticed him on GMA and he has a wonderful sense of humor. He has also shown that he can be as professional and down-to-earth as Peter was. No matter who is chosen, he or she will never be able to fill Peter's shoes completely. He was simply the best and there is no replacing him.

As sad as Peter's colleagues are to see him gone, it must be pretty tough for them deal with the successor issue. After all, they are Peter's friends, but they would not be there if they weren't professionals themselves. My vote goes to Elizabeth Vargas; we know she can handle the broadcast. So can Charlie. As for managing a major broadcast news division gone, the only ones I KNOW can do the job probably wouldn't take it: Ted Koppel, Bryant Gumbel (yes, Bryant Gumbel), and Bernard Shaw. Some interesting picks from the "next generation" of reporters, so to speak: John Roberts, Matt Laurer, Fredericka Whitfield, and anybody from Jim Lehrer's group on PBS (Gwen Ifill, Margeret Warner and all...they are ALL ready!)

This morning I posted the following Subject: YOUR VIEWS ON PETER'S SUCCESSOR - PLEASE REPLY! Keep in mind this is not a vote; rather,it is meant to get us moving forward. Peter, I think, was a "pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and move forward" kind of man. If true, it would follow that he would be horrified to see so many of his viewers continue to be deep in grief. This morning I decided to pmu, dmo, and gm. Thus, I posted what I felt would be a "thought provoking" subject. Please continue with the replies. As of 9:15 p.m. this evening, 16 respondents felt that Bob Woodruff was best suited for the position, 11 chose Charles Gibson, 6 preferred Elizabeth Vargus and 1 favoured Diane Sawyer.

Peter Jennings is very devoted man. First time I saw on ABC news with captioning program since I was 13. Right after Frank passed away. That is only captioning program runs than any other news. Peter was favored for captioning on ABC News. He was a speaker at Gallaudet University in 1991. I have watched him there. I was not graduate till 1992. A lots of Deaf people loved him. One Iranian deaf woman ran up to Peter and gave him a hug. I never seen that incident. Anyway, he is only person who I have learned so much from him. He educated me a lots but now I have attended to another univeristy to get second degree. Peter was an amazing American gentleman. He had a talent and nobody takes his seat at ABC News. I thank to Peter Jennings. JRF-

I believe Bob Woodruff is the most logical choice to take over the broadcast...not because he can "fill Peter's shoes" in any profound way, because we all know no one is going to do that, right away at least. However, I this Bob brings much passion, knowledge, and maturity to the table. I have no doubt that he would continue to adhere to the ethical principles that we came to expect and deeply respect from Peter Jennings.

I, too, vote Bob Woodruff. Reporter credentials, calm delivery, very professional. No to Diane Sawyer. I have seen too many tabloid-type stories delivered by her on Prime Time to see her as an appropriate choice. Peter shunned such stories. No to Elizabeth Vargas. She comes cross as simply reading the news with lots of facial expression. I don't believe her and trust her like I did Peter. Charlie Gibson is a good guy, no doubt, but he's been delivering fluff stories on Good Morning America for so long I don't see him as a journalist anymore. An appropriate successor (replacement is impossible) would be someone cut from a similar cloth as Peter. Reporters like Michel Norris, Bob Woodruff, Brian Ross, or Martha Radditz would do well.

Talk about style and grace - I think Ron Claiborne would be a wonderful anchor for World News! I thin Bob Woodruff is a little young. Last week after the story on the NY Fire Fighters video coming out he showed his inexperience. It was a devastating story and coming out of it he said something horribly flippant like "Sad stuff" and then moved right on talking about something. It was a Bubble Headed Bleach Blonde moment. With regard to your message this morning, I take issue with your last sentence which referred to B.Woodruff's term "sad stuff" and reads as follows: "It was a Bubble Headed Bleach Blonde moment". Your statement was also horribly flippant and steretypical, to say nothing of offensive. As a blonde with both college and university degrees I take exception to your comment. Moreover Mr. Woodruff's, remark could very well have been a poorly phrased knee-jerk response rather than insensitvely flippant. julauded

IN RESPONSE TO THOSE WHO FEEL THAT THE SUBJECT OF A SUCCESSOR SHOULD NOT BE DISCUSSED ON THIS FORUM! First, may I point out that this forum has offered solace to individuals twenty four hours a day for the past week. At some point, many of them began to think beyond the sadness. Thus, the question of who might be a suitable successor was posed. If you are not yet ready to move forward, that's fine; however, please don't criticize those who have. As a hospice worker and counsellor, I can knowingly say that, as part of the healing process, it is quite normal for individuals to begin moving away from their grief toward a place where the memories bring smiles rather than tears. Peter wasn't the sort of person to wallow in despair -his persona portrayed a man who believed in "getting on with it". That is exactly what some individuals are attempting to do. Who knows, perhaps at this moment Peter himself is watching the debate, chuckling at some of the comments and maybe even a little embarrassed at the flood of accolades being showered upon him. I offer you the following: WHEN HE IS GONE You can shed tears that he is gone Or you can smile because he has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back Or you can open your eyes and see all he has left. Your heart can be empty because you can't see him Or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday Or you can be happy for tomorrow, because of yesterday. You can remember him, and only that he has gone Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back Or you can do what he'd want; smile, open your eyes, love, and carry on. Peace, julauded

You put everything in perspective. I believe Peter would not want us to wallow in despair and yes, he would want us to move on. This message board has helped many of us in dealing with his death. Thank you and thanks to all. Irene

I have always liked Charles Gibson. Having said that, Ted Koppel is the only ABC NEWS reporter with the experience and credibility to succeed Peter. I know he is retiring... perhaps he could assume the role until a suitable replacement would be available.

It's off topic but many are asking about Peter's funeral and burial; further, as time goes on the growing responses are becoming what appears to be fiction masquerading as fact. A funeral chapel in New York, the location of which its director declined to identify, carried out a very private funeral service for family only. Cremation then took place. At a later date, Peter's ashes are to be spread at locations (not definitively identified at this time) in both the U.S. and Canada. julauded

Ted Koppel would be so right for so many reasons. I can't say enough good things about him. He's a class act. As is most everyone at ABC.

Although I like Charlie Gibson you have a good candidate in picking Bob Woodward for all the reasons you mentioned. May not be a bad idea!

In the past few days I have found all of ouI think for this reason it is extremely hard for any one of us to post an objective response to who his successor should be. The hardest thing about being a successor is that all of us expect what Peter brought to the table to be as important to the next anchor as it was to him. From a journalistic perspective, Peter seems to have been one of the best. The person who anchors this broadcast for the next twenty or thirty years if it is feasible to have a person in place that long these days should at least be objective, fair, and balanced. Peter's personal appeal that reaches out and touches all of us even now will have to yield at some point to the person who sits in that chair and reports the world's happenings. They will bring their own style to the broacast and it's going to take a while for that person to achieve a special niche of their own. Charles Gibson would be an able performer; the weekend broadcaster Terry Moran might serve well. Bob Wudruff is able and at the moment very professional which is the first step in being balanced. Remember Peter wasn't perfect at the start either,it's a character we have to develop with time. Any one of the above mentioned, and even Elizabeth would serve well. We're all looking for Peter's replacement rather than his successor. We want to turn on the TV and see him smiling at us, and that's the hardest part. Give the other able broadcasters a week or two, now that we know Peter can't return to us, even if he was off the air for a while, and we'll see who emerges. We have, for the moment, a rich field of choices. Those of us who grew up with Peter or at least came of age watching him will miss him. The best thing he can leae his successor is a desire to get it right for our children. Shelley PS: I really do miss him more than I ever thought I could mis anyone I"ve never met.r sentiments about Peter's death very touching and heart warming and with a common theme: that of persnability.
