I saw it the other night and I'm sure glad I didn't rush out and buy it. As it was I only wasted a rental fee. I have looked forward to seeing this movie since I first heard of it-- just my kind of movie, lots of music, pretty clothes, and a good story. It turned out to be the worse movie I've see all year. Jennifer Hudson must think loud means good, because she screeched every time she sung. I finally muted her about half-way thru her songs. Eddie Murphy should have gotten an Oscar, but Jennifer Hudson?? No way. Also, the movie was filmed "darkly"--- every scene needed for someone to turn on some lights. A gloomy movie. It was based on the Supremes, and Jennifer Hudson played the Florence Ballard part.  Florence Ballard left the Supremes because Diana Ross was made lead singer. Florence died in 1967.  When she left the group she was replaced by Cindy Birdsong.  Get the play on words? Jennifer H. played "Effie".  "Ef" as in Florence.

I love the Supremes. Hated the movie.

I love the Supremes. Hated the movie.

1. Dreamgirls is a play that is loosely based on the group the Supremes.

2. You must have switched around the last two numbers because Flo didn't die until 1976.

3. It must have been you set because my copy was not dark at all.

4. There is no play on words, her name is actually Cynthia Ann Birdsong.

5. I don't think the writers of the PLAY were trying to make some stupid play on words with Effie either.

5. Eddie played Buddy Love/Donkey playing Jimmy Early.  He was good for what he was but that was about it.

6. If you think Jennifer screeched, you're one of those who thinks Diana Ross sings better than Aretha Franklin.

Here's an interesting trivia note.

In the movie, Effie is told during the recoding of "Heavy" that if she doesn't tone it down than it will be done for her.

Florance Ballard's voice was so strong that it was said that she was made to stand up to 17 feet away from the mike while the others stood in a normal position to it.

Am I the only person who noticed that Diana Ross, while she can sing, doesn't have any deapth to her voice either?  Beyonce just gained deapth recently.  Sadly, many lead singers of girl groups seemed to have this problem with the exception of Patti Labelle.
