Thankyou for correcting me - yes, I meant Bob Woodruff, not Woodward. Connie

Concerned Folk: These several months, we have remained steadfast in our support of World News Tonight as we hoped for news of Mr. Jennings that we wanted to hear, not that which we are now trying to cope with. We have had opportunity to watch several others take their turn at the anchor desk. It seems to me that Mr. Gibson indeed had found his niche with GMA and that Ms. Vargas has found hers with 20/20. I would support the original vote for Bob Woodruff. To me, he has the potential to handle World News Tonight in the way Mr. Jennings did. We have seen him on site internationally: the tsunami, St. Peter's square, London, Iraq. And we have seen his approach to domestic issues in the field: Cape Cannaveral. He seems comfortable at the desk and seems to present in a more humane, less cryptic, manner than some others. The WORLD NEWS aspect needs to be preserved as part of Mr. Jennings' contribution to us as well as to ABC, and I wonder if Mr. Woodruff could not handle it more in the way Peter has than others.

I agree- Bob Woodruff is the best person to replace Peter. I think that everyone can agree that Peter is irreplacable. But, Bob Woodruff would do an outstanding job as anchor for the evening news. He has a fresh face, he is eloquent and compassionate when he delivers the news, and he has experience working in the field- just like Peter did (not to the same extent, of course). I also like Charlie. But, Charlie and Diane have such a great rapport on GMA. I think that he would be better off staying on GMA-since the ratings will inevitably drop if he leaves the morning show. Bob would be a perfect pick for the anchor job. But, I would be happy with either Charlie or Bob. I am not a big fan of Elizabeth Vargas.

I like Charles G. But I guess I grown to see him as a more casual, morning personality. My vote is for Bob Woodruff. He is young, charismatic, stern, yet softspoken. E.

Charlie is the only choice I would be comfortable with. I have watched Peter since Walter Cronkite retired and although the styles were altogether different, Peter eased right into my comfort zone. I think Charlie has the same appeal that Walter had for all those years, kinda like an older brother or uncle telling us what's happening around the world. I also am quite sure that I don't have a clue what Charlie's political persuasion is, which is what I want from my anchorperson. The only problem I see with Charlie moving to nights would be how much I would miss him every morning. He and Dianne start my mornings every Monday through Friday and I would miss him terribly but then there he would be every night so maybe it would be a good trade off. Just my humble opinion.

My choice is Charlie. He is very smart, knows what he is reporting on,studies up on it like Peter did. Did very well in the Presidential debate in St. Louis. Held his own with them. I will miss Charlie in the morning. They all have such wonderful chemestry at GMA. I have watched Bob and there is something missing, not sure what it is but I think that he needs a bit of seasoning or something. Vargus isn't even in the running to be in the anchors shoes. She just turns me off, always has. I don't even watch 20/20 anymore. I grew up with Peter Jennings and I think that Charlie has the same quality of reporting that he does, did. I just hope that ABC/NEWS will continue the same excellent quality of work that Peter Jennings has obviously inspired in the people who work in the New department.

Interesting that you should say :Bob Woodfruff needs seasoning. Remember when Peter did the early anchor and realized he had to get out of that spot? However, I think Bob Woodruff has had a great mentor in Peter Jennings. Although I absolutely love Charles Gibson, I don't think he has that "Go dig it out reporter thing." I believe Charlie will get everybody through this tough time as an interim anchor, but GMA needs him. Good luck to anyone who finally gets the anchor spot. And I will still be watching World News Tonight, no matter who it is.

I can't imagine anyone other than Bob Woodward sitting in Peter's chair. We will learn to love Bob as he has the same gentle and easy viewing personality as Peter. No one can replace Peter-he is in a class all by himself. Tricia

I agree that nobody can replace Peter but Charlie is the closest in fact very close. And I wouldn't want a Peter clone. Charlie would add his own style and make the seat his own instead of a shoe in.

My initial choice has been Charlie Gibson. Like many of you, I would miss him terribly in the morning with Diane and Robin. However, with all the juggling that they have been doing lately, I am wondering if there will be a complete change in personnel. It appears that ABC has been trying to give Mr. Gibson some time to really explore other stories by reducing his air time to three or four day weeks, and having Bill Weir and others fill in for him. Perhaps they want to continue with some kind of Gibson/Vargas pairing; or bring in someone else altogether on the evening news. At any rate, where Charlie goes, I will watch, so treat him right, ABC. He is definitely your best and most experienced "go-to guy." And no, I don't even think the network thinks you can ever truly replace anyone, especially one of your best known anchors. We are all unique. It is the manner in which that quality is recognized and handled that makes the difference.

I think Elizabeth Vargas would do quite well as Peter's successor. She has a very compassionate and caring style without comming off as biased. Bob Woodruff is also an excellent candidate. As good as Charles Gibson is on GMA, I don't think he should be considered for WTN because he seems biased to me. At any rate, Mr. Jennings shoes will be hard to fill.

In what way do you think that he is biased??? I have always been very impressed with his professionalism in all of the storys that I have watched him cover. I have found his reporting to be very well covered on both sides of a issue. ANd he is very professional in his dealing with the people whom he is interviewing. As I said before I am not sure why she strikes me the way she does,, she just does. Charlie just seems to be the most experenced and professional of them all. Very trustworthy, caring, human not just reading a script.

I also think that Elizabeth Vargas would just fine as Peter's successor first she 42 years old and has proven herself to be quiet capable to be a very good news reader. And she is very compassionate and has a caring style and she could bring back the younger viewer to WNT and get us back on top.Charles Gibson is 62 years old and does well on GMA. GMA will be #1 In the fall with Charles and Diane do agreat job on the show.

in the beginning my thought was Charlie Gibson but he is GMA. I have looked at all the reporters accomplishments and watched Bob Woodruff for the last 2 nights. My decision is final. Bob Woodruff

Bob Woodruff is reporting the news this evening. While its true that we wouldn't want to see a clone of Peter, presumably we do want someone who can measure up to Peter's persona, abilities and achievements. This evening, Bob reminded me of a young Peter Jennings. I had the impression of someone who came across as being direct, knowledgeable, professional and, just a little humbled at sitting in The Great One's Chair. That is how I saw Peter in his thirties. Please, respond with your comments. julauded

I have two different theories on the subject. Either ABC can choose to give the anchor chair to someone who has been around a while and has a proven track record on world affairs. If that is the case, Charles Gibson would be a ample choice. However, this comes with some conflict, as GMA would probably take a ratings hit in the process. A second option would be to nominate a younger anchor, like Bob Woodward, to succeed Peter. With this choice you would have someone in teh anchor chair long-term and might be a better bet for ABC in the long-run. Case-in-point, CBS has yet to fill Rather's post on a permamnent basis yet. ABC can replace Peter quite easily, however the real hard question is can they find someone to anchor WNT with the same class and dignity became such a standard in Peter's 20+ years at ABC? eiphilc2
