What would you suggest for those of us who have gaps in our work history (such as on my resume on page 2) where I was going to school and was a stay at home mom?

My name is Charles Singletary. I would briefly like to receive some insight on how my resume should be set up for corporate America in the New York City, Greater Manhattan area. Last summer I took an Internship with Major League Entertainment Media Management and Licensing Firm in NYC. I just recently graduated from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia with a Bachelors of Liberal Arts Degree. My major of concentration was Political Science. So far I have been unsuccessful obtaining any jobs, with even places like Macy's, Enterprise and Burger King. My dream is to work for Sony BMG. I have the experience and meet all of the qualifications that are required for an Assistant position at Sony, and other record labels, not to mention corporate Assisstant jobs in general. I was hoping for you to be able to take a look at my resume and let me know exactly what I need to correct on it to make it more appealing to the corporate world. I have included it below. Thank you for your time and God Bless.

Get in front of decision makers -- or people who can introduce you to decision makers.  There's so much competition so relying on the internet isn't going to cut it.  Get involved with events through MediaBistro, Ed2010 and other groups for young, aspiring editors/copywriters.  The more you're involved, the greater chance of finding solid leads.

Hi Tory!  Before I was laid off in June, my boss helped me re-work my resume.  He had some ideas that I had never heard of before, and he seemed to have experience to back up his ideas, so I got really excited about this revision.  But now I am wondering if this resume is not as effective as it should be.  Specifically, I am wondering if my experience section is a turn off for employers.  As you can see below, I include 4.5 years of experience at the same company, but it is broken out into 3 sections, which are the three positions I have held there.  What do you think about this technique?  What problems do you see with this part of my resume?  Thanks!

If you're looking for work in your field, then keep the education on top.  If you're looking for other work, then put the experience on top.  You have to customized based on what you're applying for.

I know two months sounds like a lifetime, but in the job search world, it's not very long at all!  Keep searching, but also think about a temporary gig to bring in some money and to keep you busy.  Don't worry about the past -- focus on the skills and strengths you can offer to an employer and tout those bigtime!

Hi Tory,

I was recently laid off and have submitted various resumes. However, I fear that my "clinical" title, for my non-clinical role may be hindering me and therefore casuing my resume to be overlooked. I incorporate many action verbs, as related to my previous roles. Any suggestions?

If you're applying to teach spanish and you're a great teach, but you don't know spanish, that's a problem!  If the skill you're missing wouldn't prevent you from doing the job, don't panic.  If it's the most critical skill related to that position, you'll have a hard time convincing someone.  But if it's a secondary part of the role, then taking a course or getting on the job training is absolutely an option. Go for it

Hi Tory,

I have recently moved back to the United States after living in American Samoa for 6 years.  I have been applying for several jobs for the last 3 months and only received one interview which will take place next week.

I watched GMA this morning and have a question on your tip about including a personalized customized summary.  Would the following statement be acceptable for my resuame?

I am a self-starter and initiated the creation of a digital library of environmental literature written about the archipelago for the National Park of American Samoa.   Due to the success of the project, I was asked to create digital libraries for Guam and Saipan.

Additionally I applied for a job with an employment agency who forwarded my resume to a company.    Is it appropriate to contact the company to introduce myself without going through the employment agency?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Tory,

The extended part of my resume, after my education and previous jobs, is broken down in areas of skills,  i.e.  Business Development, Operations Management, Employee Orientation and Training, Critical Judgment and Quality Assurance.  Under each of those headings, I have listed specifics of my skills in those areas, without linking them to a particular company.  Should I go back and reorganize that part and link skills to a specific job?

I know as a hiring manager, I hated reading resumes that listed the same job skills under each work history entry.

Thanks for your previous input.

Jan Percy

Tell that exact thing to an employer when they say you're overqualified.  Speak up and say -- that means you'll get a greater bang for the buck!  Try offering to freelance or consult since they often want someone even more qualified in those roles.  Don't back down -- push a little!  You can win them over -- it only takes one to say yes!

Functional is the most common  for sure.  Submit the top 1/4 of the page -- minus your personal contact information -- and I'll look at it here.  Usually all it takes it that much to see what's right, what's wrong, etc.

Don't just tell me what you did -- tell me how well you did it.  A resume shouldn't just rehash your responsibilities; it should also celebrate your successes.  Be cautious of the tense you use -- some cases you use present "PROVIDES" -- others are past.  Assisted/assisting, etc.  Just be consistent and beef this up by tweaking some of the bullets to reflect a success.

I didn't say that!  If you have the option to submit the cover letter, definitely do it.  And when you're applying to an email address or a person, always include the cover letter.  Not too long -- just enough to convey the key aspects as to why you're ideal for the job.
