Today, I was parked in a local shopping center parking lot.  As I sat in my vehicle, (wating for a friend to return) my attention was aroused when I spotted an elderly caucasion gentleman dressed in security clothing.  He was holding the hand of two very young girls approx. age of the girl in his left hand 9. The approx. age of the child also female in his right hand was 5.  He was moving rather abruptly in a rather unorthodox manner which may be due to his size, as he was a rather large man. (in girth)  As he was passing my vehicle I took notice to the two children in his grasp, who were of African American decent.  Lumbering along they appeared not to be happy, but sad and somewhat teary eyed.  As they approached a vehicle to my rear my eyes drifted to the side view mirror, then back to the rear view mirror, for this had my complete attention at this point.  The man opened the driver side rear door and ushered the two children in.  I did take notice he did not take special care to fasten the children into their seats as would any person with the smallest care for another life.  Especially, children who, at that age don't neccessarily have the preconception to do so themselves.  He proceded to enter the car, into the drivers seat, and started the automobile.  At this point, I had an odd feeling of responsibility to these two children.  I exited my vehicle and proceded over to his.  I stopped by his driver door, and he then opened the power window  and without allowing him to speak, I began, rather carefully to express my concern for what I had witnessed in him.  Carefull not to express the horrible thoughts that were penetrating through my head of the potential horror these children could possibly encounter with what has and could occur to their innocense.  He then abruptly explained they were his grandchildren and asked me what business of it was mine....These words resonated in me, as I returned to my car.  I thought to myself what a curious human being caring for the well-being of my grandchildren would bring joy to me knowing someone cares.  I also thought it may have been difficult circumstance for him, an older gentleman with two young granddaughters dressed in obvious work clothing. with whatever life struggles he may have encountered with these youngsters.  I then noticed a woman somewhat younger than him, however old enough to be a mother herself.  She entered the passenger front door, and began a short conversation which appeared to be less than a happy father/daughter moment.  He then exited the parking lot.  As I sat now completly puzzled by what I had just witnessed, I noticed two police vehicles parked across the lot, and at that point I thought I should report what I saw.  In retrospect, paying a little more attention to detail may have proven to be more helpful.  I still feel better having reacting to an occurance that I would have earlier in my life discounted as being none of my business as the man expressed to me.  I am happy with myself, reassured of my conviction to act on my gut rather than question my response. So That's What I Did...
