    • Friendliness Causes Co-Workers To Get Fired

I'm a contract worker with a telecommunications company and recently got involved in some really messed up office politics. I was assigned to train a couple of new co-workers who were contracted from a temp agency and I thought that things were going okay. Both workers seemed to be picking up on the database work quite fast and seemed to be adapting pretty well.

A couple days later, they didn't show up for work and when I checked with my immediate supervisor, she mentioned that they were no longer assigned to the department.  Since I knew one of the guys at the Staffing Service the company went through I did some checking on my own and found out to my shock that they were released early from the assignment. He wouldn't give me specific details but he mentioned that the company wasn't really happy with their performance. They were only on the job for less than a week.

To say the least, I felt guiltridden. I kept thinking if I did something to contribute to them getting fired? I admit I may have been a bit too talkative with the new co-workers but I thought I was just being friendly and helpful and no one seemed to mind that I was helping them out.

Does anyone have any helpful insight that might help to make some sense to all this?

I think you should try your best  to help  the new  men  ,but you have to keep them  a distance  .

May have been that the company decided they didn't need these poistions filled?

Too helpful? Doubt it, but some bosses think that if you are too helpful, those that you are helping will need help forever. Too friendly, your work will be affected later on.

I doubt you did anything wrong. My experience in big business it that the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing, and decisions are being made by people who don't understand what they are addressing in.   I would not loose sleep over this, I am sure no one is blaming you.

My experience as a temp didn't go as well either. I was contracted to answer phones at  a property management company. It was suppose to last 6 weeks, but within a week, I was let go. The HR manager said it was because I was to to friendly with one of the full-timers and we talked too much. I couldn't help that we hit it off but we did. Anyway, I thought the HR manager over-reacted but ever since that day, if I ever work temp, I don't become too friendly with the full-etime staff or temp staff. I'm not rude or anything, but I go in, do my job, and leave. It's just too easy for someone to get let go.

I did some temping in the past. The good thing about temping is that it allows you to get inside and see what it would truly be like to work at a company. Some seasoned employees where you are temping will be on guard knowing that you are smarter, better educated, and may very well take their jobs. I would love to be able to say that this world is fair and that we get what we deserve. But it is not, and we do not. I was offered a lot of permanent positions when I temped. The reason I was offered these jobs is that I was quiet. I did not gossip, but I was polite and considerate. Is this plastic/fake? Yes, but I was there for the money. If I want to be a buddy I will join a social club.
