I lost my husband to lung cancer 9 years ago. He was a heavy smoker. I am so glad to see that there is coverage of lung cancer and smoking. I am now a volunteer with the American Cancer Society and my goal is to educate the young children about the dangers of smoking. For the last three years, the local American Cancer Society and the Corpus Christi Cancer Center have put on a program for 5th graders about the dangers of smoking. We have speakers, local celebrities. Each year there is at least 400 5th graders who attend. At the end of the program, the kids make a pledge not to start smoking. In 3 years, we will have a huge program with about 2500 kids attending. These will be the same kids who made the pledge. We hope to find out if these programs have an influence on them. Our city is now smoke free in all restaurants and will be totally smoke free within the next 2 years.
