No, this is not all a smoke screen.
Sure, there are people who die of cancer who have never smoked. But, cancer gets many more smokers than non-smokers. One in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit. Smokers also get more heart disease, emphysema, and high blood pressure than non-smokers. The nicotine and carbon monoxide in each cigarette you smoke temporarily increases your heart rate and blood pressure, straining your heart and blood vessels. Subsequent straining of your heart and blood vessels can cause heart attacks and stroke. It slows your blood flow, cutting off oxygen to your feet and hands. Some smokers actually end up having their limbs amputated. Men who smoke are ten times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers. Smoking causes around one in five deaths from heart disease. In younger people, three out of four deaths from heart disease are due to smoking.
