I was very moved by ABC's retrospective of the life of Peter Jennings. He is the only evening newscaster I ever watched - ever WOULD watch. He seemed to always know what to say and how, and to broaden the minds of all of us. The special on his life revealed that he was an extrodinarily kind and modest man for one of his stature, and a role model for what we are capable of..... A leader in his field without ever having graduated from high school. Wow.
But I think the strongest memory I will have of Peter Jennings is how he brought the nation through 9/11. For all intents and purposes, Mr. Jennings was the President of the United States that day. He is the one we turned to in order to try to understand and comprehend what was happening. While I know they had their own priorities, we heard nothing from the Bush camp for a very long time..... I remember even Mr. Jennings alluding to that fact!
I remember thinking to myself last fall that he did not look well, and I was so saddened to later hear that I was right. He was truly a father figure to our country - indeed he reminded me very much of my own father - and he will be sorely missed.
