Dr. Tim, I am a nurse and I have also suffered from post-partum depression with both my children. My son is now 8 and my daughter is 5. I'm quite sure that it lasted a full year. I never took medication, because I was breastfeeding. However, when my son was 5 months old I realized I wasn't "quite right" and decided to enter counseling. I was in counseling for 7 months and it helped a lot. I never went back to counseling after my daughter was born because I recognized the symptoms and I knew I had it again. The depression was milder after the birth of my daughter, but I'm sure it lasted a whole year. I am now 37 years old and 2 years ago I began having panic attacks. I now take Cymbalta and Xanax XR daily. I see a psychiatrist for this problem and I also starting back to counseling. I have been told by both the psychiatrist and my OB/GYN that many women my age experience this problem. Many women don't talk about these problems because of the stigma that may ensue. However, these problems should be brought out into the open forum, because there are many women out there that have these problems, but are afraid to talk about it. More stories like this one presented on ABC tonight should be aired. We must get the word out. It could save lives.

I want to second the thank you! I had Post Partum Psychosis - I survived but the battle was long and hard. Thank you for taking time to help moms when others are blowing them off, saying what they are going through is "normal". The broadcast tonight was awesome - and your ideas of screening ALL mothers 2-3 wks post partum would truly help moms - the help would come to them and not make them find help. Thank you!
