    • 480,000 Legal Reasons For More Mass Killings?

America has the largest amount of legal gun holders, than any other country in the world. There are currently 480,000 legal guns in America. So you can bet your last botttom dollar that there will be many more brutal killings, until all the guns in America are eliminated. But since our great American society advertises guns, violence, and sex 24 hours a day, more angry people will use their legally purchased guns, just like the late Mr. Choi, to kill many innocent Americans.

Hey, I don't know where you get your numbers pal, but the estimates are closer to 300-450 MILLION firearms here in the United States. And the vast majority of them are 'legal'! There are over 80 million legitimate gun owners in America... I think your calculator is broken brother. Now, I admire your Utopian fantasy of how life 'ought' to be here in America; but the fact is, it's totally unrealistic to think that even with full gun confiscation; that the authorities could even come CLOSE to getting them all. In any case, it would mean Civil War, if the attempt were made. Which it won't be... The powers that be, are simply not that stupid. Zulu

Not to mention that there are about as many automobiles as guns in the U.S., and there are many, many more deaths due to automobiles than guns. And I DONT appreciate some person who doesn't know myself trying to tell me that I have no right to defend myself or my family because they don't like guns. You say guns are dangerous, well guess what, being alive is dangerous. Reducing by the number of 1 the ways a person can die will not make this country or world a safer place. The only way to make this world safe from the humans is to do away with the humans. How are you going to accomplish that one?

Sorry, I read the numbers wrong, I thought they said 480 million not thousand. I stand by my post. Many gun owners have several firearms.

Americans have always had and will never give up the right to bear arms. If you don't like guns, you're welcome to move to Australia.

ok number one your numbers are totally wrong how can there be 480,000 guns in the U.S. when there are 80,000,00+ gun owners. Number two why would I want the US to be like the UK or Austrialia. We are a great and different nation, we dont need to be like everybody else. The reason the US exists today is cause we didnt want to be like the UK, lets keep it that way.

It is not unusual for someone who enjoys shooting sports to have many firearms. Some are simply collectibles such as historical guns from a certain period. Others are for a specific purpose: Pistol Target shooting, Rifle Target Shooting, Competition, Trap shooting, Hunting, Self Defense, etc....I personal have over 2 dozen firearms in my collection. Even if the numbers originally cited were correct, that would only be 6 firearms per person on average. For many of us this is a hobby as well as a means of potential self defense.

Interesting philosophy... There are hundreds of people (families) killed every year because of monoxide poisoning from their furnaces, maybe we should do away with them too? I cannot imagine how many children are killed from drinking poisons like cleansers, or anything else under the sink. Maybe we should get rid of them too? You know, there are thousands of people who are dieing because of alcohol. You know, they are not only killing themselves but others, and children too. Maybe we should get rid of alcohol too? You hit the nail on the head... "MORE ANGRY PEOPLE". Instead of focusing on the gun, why don't you (and everyone else) focus on being more nice to those us. You know, be friendly, work with people, don't cop attitudes, and come to the realization that someone other than "me" can have a good idea! And you know, we parents would keep their kids from watching all the sex/violence on TV, I'll bet the TV stations would change their programming. Both would also be good options.

Estimated total U.S. population as of 2006= 298,444,215. Total legal firearms by your count=480,000. Assuming, all else constant, each citizen owned one firearm this would mean: Total persons not owning firearms=297,964,215 Does that even begin to sound logical? Plus, many here have stated that we own more than one fire arm so that throws these number askew again. Plus, are we counting only firearms manufactured after a certain year? Does this number include firearms assigned to the entire law enforcement community, military, CIA, and Private security companies? That throws the 480,000 out of whack again. You see, again thinking logically, will the numbers of murders decline with the total elimination of legal firearms? Because that's the only persons who would term them in, legal owners.

Where on earth do you people get this information? The DOJ statistcs for legal firearms is 193 million. Moreover, there an estimated 80 million unregistered, pre-registration, firearms. Approximately 45% of U.S. household own a legal firearm. There is no way of determining the number of unregistered firearms. And, note to ABC, quit censoring my posts. I cite DOJ and British Homeland Office statistics and provided links and other information. If you cannot handle someone's reasoned presentation of the facts, might I suggest you get out of the news business. So, I am reposting it all: The DOJ website (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance/viort.htm) reports 5,100 firearm homicides in 2005 AND that includes accidental homicides, police shootings, firearm deaths from all causes. If the data is put on a level field with that reported by (say) England, the actual number of homicides in total and the actual number committed with firearms is almost exactly the same. Moreover, the DOJ statistics and Home Office numbers for England show that you are three times more likely to be the victim of a serious violent crime if you live in England, France, Germany, Wales, Australia, Canada, Scotland, Sweden... in fact the U.S. doesn't even make the top 20 for percent of population victimized by a violent crime. Not what nut jobs like the "Brady Bunch" would have you believe. Instead, they would have you and the world believe that this is a violent and unjust place. Something else for you to ponder: *The British government banned handguns in January 1997 but recently reported that gun crime in England and Wales nearly doubled in the four years from 1998-99 to 2002-03. *Australias 1996 gun-control regulations banned many types of guns and the immediate aftermath was similar. While murder rates remained unchanged, armed robbery rates averaged 59% higher in the eight years after the law was passed (from 1997 to 2004) than in 1995. *The Republic of Ireland banned and confiscated all handguns and all center fire rifles in 1972, but murder rates rose fivefold by 1974 and in the 20 years after the ban has averaged 114% higher than the pre-ban rate (never falling below at least 31% higher). *Jamaica banned all guns in 1974, but murder rates almost doubled from 11.5 per 100,000 in 1973 to 19.5 in 1977, and soared further to 41.7 in 1980.

Brooks-

Great information here!  But, and if you look at any post of mines or others that contain actual facts and not emotions, it will get ignored because all the anti-gun hippies can't counter a statement based on logic.  Instead, the skip over it, rant something like:

blah, blah, in Europe and Canada, blah blah, gun control, blah blah, *whine* I don't feel safe with all these guns around, blah.

But if you ask a question, which I did and it strangely disappered, like what happens when all the legal gun owners turn in their weapons and in two years the murder rate doesn't decrease because criminals still have their weapons, the are stunned into silence.
