Hurricane Victims Selling Meals on eBay? The government is looking into whether eBay (search) sellers in Gulf Coast states are trying to profit from military foodstuffs handed out for free following hurricanes Katrina (search), Rita and Wilma. Representatives for eBay, the online auctioneer company, say it is impossible to prove that any of the meals were meant for hurricane victims. They note that MREs can be bought in camping stores and Army-Navy surplus outlets. But at least some of the MREs advertised on the Web site are being sold from Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida (search) and other Gulf states, and are individually packaged with a disclaimer that clearly notes: "U.S. Government property ? Commercial resale is unlawful." "If it's true, that's pretty reprehensible," said Cheryl Guidry Tyiska, deputy director of the National Organization of Victim Assistance. "There are a lot of pretty hungry people down there who could use the food for free." One seller, identified as from "Louisiana Cajun Country," described being hit "with the eye of Rita." Bidding had reached $50.99 for the seller's unopened case of MREs by Saturday. "It was very depressing to come back and see that Rita took half our roof with her and left a lot of trees on the fence," the seller wrote. "I am still in a state of shock and a daze. It has really been a mess. I thank God for my solid gold eBay customers. Thanks for your prayers." http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,173915,00.html

I think the Government should look into this situation. EBay should br govern by rules and laws, just like any other business, and if it can be proven that things were sold illegally on that system then they should be penalized hard.. just like any other "Fencing" Operation. This isn't the first time EBay was tied in with illegalities and things not proper. Also penalized should be the one buying and the one selling such items. The sad truth is that I went on the internet and found that you could buy a case of MREs for $55, yet this woman who just sold a case today sold it for $86. That doesn't speak very well for the intelligence of some EBay shoppers, now does it?

Hurricane Victims Selling Meals on eBay? ************************************* Could be stolen, I'm sure much of the needed supplies never reached the intended Hurricane Victims and was probably skimmed off on the way down the chain and many victims took more then their share...I know of this one Salvation army truck driver that would make pickups of items donated and stop at his house on the way back and have all of his relatives get their picks of the furniture, housewares, clothes etc...He said most do it and no one cares because they do the same thing at the sorting warehouse....~Raddy~

That's a painful thing to know. Okay, ebay for stolen items...I'm sure that's not a new one. A woman won a million dollars here in North or South Carolina, instant lottery scratch-off. She was investiaged and used a stolen credit card. The idiot is in jail, and lost out on a $million win, she had 2 dollars she could have paid for it with. Adults must learn adult behavior.

It the MREs for sale are marked "Not for sale" or "Resale of item illegal" or anything like that and if they are claimed to be stolen.. then Ebay and the seller should be guilty on two counts, instead of just one. It would be better if the Sellers say they were given the stuff and decided to resell them, even if they were stolen.
