On tonight's Nightline coverage of the blizzard, they did a story about those who ignored warnings to stay off the road in favor of a "higher purpose". One person featured was a diner owner telling his employee come into work because it says "24 hour" on the diner sign. Apparently that diner sign is worth risking the death of the employee and/or others the employee may crash into.
Another story was pet store owners who had "things" that needed fed. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that the dear creatures in that store we're being fed, but it seems rather disingenuous to paint the owners has noble, when they would lose money if the "things" died. So many dogs end up in rescue or euthanize after being born into a puppy-mill & sold at a pet store. Puppy-mill dogs often have all sorts of genetic problems and communicable illnesses & are often treated horribly. For me, the most striking visual was the puppy in a small display case trying to chew his/her way through the glass. I did dog rescue for years & even fostered a puppy-mill stud dog who previous to coming to live with us had spent basically all of his 3 years in a small cage, only getting out to breed. If they genuinely cared about the "things" in their store, they wouldn't perpetuate this cycle.
