Where is the "kinder, gentler nation" that Ronald Reagan promised to us?

Why couldn't the US show a little generosity to a world that has benefitted us so much, and allowed the "Doha" talks to succeed?  Yes, China and India want to protect their much poorer farmers,  and we could justify opposing their stance if it weren't for the fact that US farmers are still heavily subsidized and want to use US taxpayer-funded subsidies to undersell Chinese and Indian farmers in their own home markets.

The biggest losers are, as usual, those who are the poorest to begin with.  Yet again, we put our own greed above making the friends that we desperately need around the world.  I am afraid that we may pay dearly for this lack of foresight.
