Russia has begun works in the Syrian port of Tartus seeking to built a full-scale naval base for the ships of the Black Sea Fleet, currently based in Ukraine?s Sevastopol, the Kommersant newspaper reported on Friday, quoting unnamed sources in the Defense Ministry and the General Staff of the Russian Navy. http://www.mosnews.com/news/2006/06/02/syrianbase.shtml

Oh wow! A set of old Soviet rust buckets against the US fleet. Odds of us winning if a fighting war breaks out? We suffer one ship sunk and a few damaged, to them loosing their whole fleet and their bases. However, it will not come to that. They are not that stupid.

Then, I guess we just scrap their fleet and kill thousands. Just because their leadership is bad.

Soviet Union although still a threat but has no longer the capability to counteract U.S.. It became bankcraft in Agfhaganistan war and lost majority of its Warsaw Pac allies. All Putin was doing is a big mouth although I don't trust this guy, a former KGB agent.

Putin IS KGB.  There was never an end to the cold war. There was only a tactical retreat to reorganize. The KGB has always been in control and that is how Putin got to be where he is.

However, at this point, even if the combined military of the entire world were to unite behind the KGB it would be dwarfed by the US military.  There is no entity in the world who can approach military parity with the US now and it is US policy to never ever allow such parity to ever occur again. So all the huff and puff of the KGB Russian State (by any name)is just that. It is with this position of overwhelming strength that the US can refer to Russia or anyone else it chooses as "partners".  Multilateralism is the policy of the US.  But bucking US multilateralism is not wise.  Iran will be an example of that in the near future.  Russia will be our "partner" whether they want to or not.

here is where you can find a list of Soviet (oops) Russian ships:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Russian_Navy_ships_and_submarines

BTW, they may have 10 SSBN, but only two of them can be on station at a time and they are very noisy and very detectecable. Most of the ships are way past their normal 20 year retirement age and their aircraft are about as old.

Yep, really scary.

everytime the Soviet, erh, Russian navy wants to deply somewhere, something bad happens and the deployment is either just one ship or called off.

Great stuff, but at least they don't put their men in leaky subs with faulty reactors any more....widowmakers!
