No, only because my OB/Gyn said that it wasn't medically necessary, and we couldn't see putting our newborn through a surgery, also fearing that it would prevent or disturb breastfeeding. We had no support for our decision, but followed our heart. It wasn't until years later, when I saw a re-run of Marilyn Milos on the Phil Donahue Show that I knew I had to contact her! I learned about how right our decision was, the natural functions of the (fore) skin, and now have 2 happy, healthy intact sons. They are thankful that we made the choice we did and left the decision ultimately to the owner! Neither has had any 'issues', problems, or incidents concerning the most private & sexual part of their body, and I suspect that they'll make the same choice when & if they have sons.
Thank you Marilyn, for accepting the change of direction in your life 30 years ago. You have made tremendous strides and provided much support and education not only to parents & children, but many health care professionals, and have saved many babies from unnecessary surgeries.
I also suspect, that many UTI's are a result from improper care. The AAP gets it right when they advise that retraction should NOT take place by anyone other than the owner - as he's the only one that will not cause pain or complications. Best advice; Leave it ALONE!
