I have a 34 year old son who displayed classic symptoms of autism when he was a child (I didn't hear about Asperger's until years later) but my efforts to get him diagnosed and treated failed.  I kept trying until he was 24 and I could no longer keep him on my health insurance plan.  The closest I got, was a visit to a psychiatrist who diagnosed him with depression and gave me a prescription for a mood elevator (I don't remember the drug name but it made him crazy!). From my research, I believe he displays the classic symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome.  He still lives at home but holds a job as a security guard. He also just got health insurance through that job, so what kind of doctor should he see? Should he start with a primary care and get referrals and if so, what kind of doctor is qualified to diagnose ASD?  Any help is appreciated!

Your son could see an

Psychiatrists or Psychologists/Neuropsychologists, but ask when you call if they are educated about Asperger's Syndrome.
