Greetings,

I recently moved from the US to Indonesia where my Humalog insulin for Type 1 has an erratic supply.  Is it possible for a Type 1 to survive without insulin just by exercise and diet alone should my supply be interrupted?

    Thank You -

Robert S. Finnegan

Hi USMC666 and thank you for your question. Here is an answer to your question from S. Kalani Brady, M.D., M.P.H., Associate Professor, University of Hawai'i John A. Burns School of Medicine:

Type 1 diabetics are generally dependent upon insulin injections to maintain control of their diabetes. While humalog may not be available consistently in Indonesia, there are many types of insulin used throughout the world, and I would encourage you to establish care with a local physician, preferably an endocrinologist, and evolve to a type of insulin readily and consistently available in their area.
