I had an automobile accident almost 10 years ago. I have rods and screws in that leg. I have non stop pain and presently am taking hydrocodone 7.5/750. I went to a new doctor and he prescribed me ULTRAM 100 mg. I have been on hydrocodone for the last 2 years. Will this be hard on my body switching medicines?

Hi dverstaete and thank you for your question. Here is an answer from Benoy Benny, M.D., Director, Spine, Sports and Pain Program, Baylor College of Medicine:

Ultram is another medication that can be used to treat pain. It is a partial opioid and even though it is usually not as strong as the hydrocodone 7.5/750, some patients respond better to that and some patients do not. It should not be too hard on your body, but different people react differently to different medications. Unfortunately with a lot of pain medications, the only way to know for sure is to try it.
