Let the public beware that...

I purchased all my appliances from Sears in May 2004 - approx 4.5 yrs ago.  The icemaker on my frig went out and I called Sears.  The repair stayed at my house for 2 and a half hours.  then after replacing all the parts and it would not work he replaced the enitre ice maker and it still would not work.

Next the repairman called his tech support who said the frig icemaker is not repariable at all and has an electrical problem AND IS A SAFETY HAZARD. The repairman told me not to use it as he left (with a box full of parts in a box on my kitchen counter.)

I do not have a warranty, therefore they tell me the problem is mine....  I tried to call Sear Customer Service. Nobody there can do anything. Completely ridiculous... I finally called One Source (Sear's Executive Response Center)  They offered me a 100.00 coupon and said that is all they can do.

So, I am stuck with a $2500.00 refridgerator that is four and a half years old, that is a safety hazard according to the Sears repairman.

I do not reccommend Sears for anything. I plan to hang out in the Sear applicance area and let everyone I meet know that Sears does not stand behind its products (even when they diagnose a safety issue).  Be sure to never buy from Sears, their goodwill is non existent and there is no way to talk to anyone who can make a decision to do the right thing.

Moreover, Sears does not even care to get the refrigerator back to make sure there is not a safety issue with more of their products on the market in homes like yours!  Or at least get the product back to see what the problem is and communicate it to their factory so they can prevent any possible future problems.

Beware of Sears Kenmore Moldel Refrigerator 106.54602300...Sears' own technicians have identified mine as a potential fire harzard and Sears does not care.

Did you get the repairman to write this on the repair form?  If so, send a copy to whatever consumer group that determines recalls.  Sometimes companies do voluntary recalls & sometimes they have to be forced to.  Report them.  There is absolutely no excuse for an appliance that is a fire hazard to not be recalled.  My dishwasher model (Maytag) was setting fires & it's electrical panel was certainly recalled.

I am sure they do all they can for our troops....as they should.  Rest assured their troop support is tied to  trying to get people in their stores...  And they probably do it for publicity to cover their remaining lack of business ethics.  I am not a hppay camper. the repairman did not leave a slip or anything. He only left a box of parts on my counter....

What would Ty Pennington think about this? After all, that's all they promote on Extreme Home Makeovers, right?
Thanks for the heads-up. I'm in the market for a new fridge and know not to go to Sears now.

They have it the situation documented, its just that the repairman did not leave a slip and I did not think to ask.... They still say (easy way out) since there is no warranty, they cannot help, even if the product was deemed a safety hazard....one person told me to contact Kenmore...(sold exclusively by Sears) . If you go google search kenmore all you get is Sears....Kenmore=Sears...it is a rat hole to follow.

I am happy to hear you have never had a problem with Sears.  Have you ever tried to resolve an issue with them about their products?  If you do, hope you have success.  Yhey have shown me that they do not care to protect their customers and do not stand behind the products they sell (even when they acknowledge their is a safety concern) only if you buy a "extended warranty".

Antonia, I agree and I am willing to pay to repair the fridge...if it was repairable. I dont want something for nothing. But, the repairman said (after 2.5 hours and calling his tech service center for help) that it is NOT repairable. I watched him work on the refridgerator the entire time and I also listened to his conversation on the phone wth the tech services dept at Sears while they tried to figure out what was wrong...

After getting off the phone the repairman told me there is an electrical problem with the refridgerator and it is a safety hazard (fire). IF it was repairable he would have repaired it and I would gladly pay.

The point is that Sears (and I called their National Customer Service Center and have talked to numerous people for hours) does not stand behind their products -   - even if they diagnose a fire hazard with the product, they will not take it back....bottom line is they are not the type of business I can reccommend based on my experience. In my opinion their degree of business ethics is weak, whether or not they continue to pay reservist benefits and salary or not.

The technician only told me it is a safety hazard due to wiring that they cannot get to.  Even if it were ice maker specific , it would not matter, I do not want to take a chance with an electrical problem in an appliance.  So far Sears has done nothing to resolve. They did make an unreasonable offer of a 100.00 coupon. Their customer service people are not empowered to make decisions so they keep falling on "you did not have an extended warranty" , the real issue is the refrigerator does not work like it should cor what would be considered reasonable  life adn it was deemed by their own technician to be a safety hazard... The ice maker remains disassembled in the box it was left in by the repairman, who left me no documentation of his visit.....
