Our dog is 12.5 years old and has always been fearful when it comes to loud noises, thunder, lightning. However, if he is outside when it is thundering he is not bothered. His fear/phobia has gotten so much worse. He seems to be exibiting separation anxiety behavior which has started in the past year. Our lifestyle has not changed during that time. I am a trainer so I know how to desensitize to separation anxiety but nothing helps. We have a family room surrounded by a deck and there are 5 sliding glass doors. If I go outside to feed the birds he turns into a basket case--vocalizing, etc. If I take him outside with me and I go off the deck and out of his sight he immediately begins excessive panting/vocalizing. He pants excessively to the point his tongue hangs out of his mouth very limp and red; he vocalizes excessively. His body contracts and expands so much I can see if from across a large room. He is on 100 mg twice daily of Clomipramine but it doesn't seem to do much good. If you have any holistic alternatives I would be forever grateful to you.
