My 3 yr old white (yellow) Lab had a black nose to start with, then turned pink, and has gone back and forth every so often since beginning, but this spring its turned pink and the black is scaling off in pieces and the pink under is bleeding sometimes little droplets, and it almost looked gouged on one side. I made a Vet appt.but before it came due, the pink is healing back to near black and I cancelled. What could cause this condition ? There are no fleas or mites on my 2 dogs, they get along (other dog is Sheltie) and I feed them both Lamb and Rice dry food, always been very healthy! Still are but this one problem with Lab's nose. Thanks for any ideas, and what can be done? could it be simply too much sun?

In breeds like yours the change is sun-related.  In summer use sunscreen to prevent burning and emollients to improve moisturization.

The same thing has been happening to my black lab's nose! This is now the third time -- the other 2 times it healed in time. I had assumed it was related to using plastic bowls (I had heard of this in cats a few years ago) and replaced them with stainless bowls.

My dog is outside a lot so it makes sense that it's sun-related. Getting him to allow me to apply sunscreen or neosporin on his nose (and not licking it off) is going to be a challenge. But it's good to know his nose is NOT rotting out.
