In December I quit a job because my supervisor was harrasing me because I was a woman. After reporting him and the company, he blew up and became belligerent. I felt like I was truly in a hostile environment. After review the company said they had no one else me for me to work with I desided to resign. I know I should have stayed and seen if it was going to get worse but the day to day issues had started causing health issues. Nevertheless, here it is 5 months later and I can not seem to find a job. One problem is that I am single mom and even though I have worked retail in past, the hours are not always feasible for a single mom. I have a degree in Information Systems but it seems truly difficult to get my foot in the door without numerous certifications. What options do you think I have besides retail to get my foot back in the workforce? I am truly desperate at this point. I want to be able to work but I also dont want my son to think he wont get to see me because of crazy scheduling.
On the retail side, you can look at companies that offer "school shifts" -- such as the CONTAINER STORE. Crate & Barrel is another good one. A store-level position could lead to a corporate role.
On the IT side, you should join professional groups, network with parents of your son's friends to see if they can help with leads, attend career fairs in your area. You have to make sure those IT skills are up to date or else you'll be chasing something that won't happen. If you recently got a degree or certifications, talk to the school and ask for their support with career services. Good luck
