I am returning to the theatre world after a 10 year gap to raise my children.  What is the best way to write a cover letter to positively explain my gap?

Briefly explain your prior related experience and then describe some of the highlights of what you've done in the past 10 years. So instead of saying you've raised your kids, focus on some of the specific tasks/projects you've managed that would leverage your talents in the theatre world.  Sometimes it's easiest to do this in a bulleted format where you start by saying you're writing to express your interest in X position.  Then offer 3 to 5 bullets on the skills you bring -- including prior related experience.  You can be light about some things and serious about others.  You've handled 5 demanding personalities, plus those of their friends and other parents, which mirrors the theatrics of the entertainment industry....so you'll be able to pick up where you left off.  If you've volunteered for any kind of theater companies or plays, include why that's meaningful.  Think along these lines.  End by saying you've enjoyed this time immensely and now you're ready for the next stage which is focusing back on your career in the field you love.  Hope this helps -- good luck
