When our children do have a cough, what are the key symptoms that we should look for to know whether the cough is an indicator of more serious condition that requires medical attention? By the way, Dr. Sharfstein, I have admired your work on behalf of children over the years. Keep up the good work. T. Sulfate

If parents reach for an ineffective cough and cold preparation when their young child is sick enough to cause worry... instead of calling the doctor ... the result can be unnecessary delay in receiving important medical care. For example, cough with a high fever can be a sign of a serious pneumonia. Cough with trouble breathing can be the sign of pneumonia, asthma, or even aspiration. The best judge of concern is often the parent. If you are worried, it's always best to talk it over with your doctor or nurse. Best to you and the Sulfate family.
