I'd say check with "www.testyourrelationship.com" to make sure it is a safe relationship worth hanging on to first...Making some agreements about who does what chore and care wise (if there are kids involved) is impt too, to stave off the bulk of troubles. Revisiting the working agreements and seeing that there is follow-thru is impt. Same with financial earnings and spending plans. Suze Orman has good advice in small books about day to day and longterm financial health.
Now, to the 'fun stuff"...Connecting spiritually is likely a special journey to venture on, with an understanding that individually we are each separate spirits and personalities, so may need certain things to grow, but within guidelines of fairness and mutually-agreed upon boundaries. That's what monogamous relationships are largely based on...a 2-player only system, and that's a big boundary, which includes what one views, reads and so on..Keeping to a basic "10 Commandments" protocol, should keep most trouble at bay.
John Gray books are great, along with Faber-Mazlish parenting tips which help tune people into male-female communication styles. D Goleman's insights are good too, in Social Intelligence. Then, keeping track of one's life's goals (to be successful, creative, helpful, etc) in balance with the relationship (as in actual time and things done together, if possible, which is a sign of health all-around), and contributing to groups such as a faith circle, school, community organization, keeping fit and balanced with family and friends...That should pretty much keep wind in the sails as life moves along through stages of growth, challenge, and change.
