You are so right refuge, at this point I think Howard is looking out to keep Mommy Dearest away from this child, a child that he loves, and if he is not her biologial father he loved her mother and he accepted her for who she was, therefore he accepts the child that she bore, he is willing to do whatever it takes to keep Vergie away from this innocent child.
