What I would like to suggest is to express your passion to the board.  Explain that because salary is not the issue, but the dedication and passion that you would bring to the organization.  Let them know that you are more reliable, dependable than the youth they are considering and this is where you what to be rather than a stepping stone to the next level.  It helped me get a freelance assignment and I was able to include the organization on my resume as current.  Hope this helps!
