LIGHTEN UP,WILL YOU???Hairspray is a musical, for Heaven's sakes! John Travolta did a FANTASTIC job in his role as Edna, acting, dancing and singing;all in that fat suit! It made me laugh at first, but as the film went on, I bought into the concept that Travolta was a woman-AND I'M A 46 YEAR OLD STRAIGHT MARRIED MAN! The chemistry between Travolta, Christopher Walken as Edna's husband ,and newcomer Nikki Blonsky as Edna's daughter is just priceless;and the duet between Travolta and Walken was ,like the song, 'Timeless'.
As for the movie's message; It doesn't matter what you look like, just accept different people as they are;good, decent people! What could be more simple than that?
Hairspray was the most fun I ever had in a theater, and that includes"Rocky Horror"! I'm sorry you took such a cynical view towards Travota's performance, because I thought it was Oscar worthy!
