In the case of an urgent need for kidney donation (or anything for that matter)... the media can make an unbelievable difference.  If the public is aware of:

1) The crucial need

2) The procedure for donating (which is getting easier each year)

3) The fact that a body can be perfectly healthy with only one kidney

4) Personal stories of (local?) people on the kidney waiting list

... I am confident that there would be MANY more good samaritan donors.
