It is a rare and sad event that took place at VT. In fact it is very rare for a mentally ill person to act out in a violent manner. I am concerned that this incident is causing people to make generalizations about the mentally ill. I have heard things such as "we should not allow people with mental illnesses go to college". Mentally ill people do not chose to be ill and have every right to pursue higher education. Our government has spent considerable time developing the American Disabilities Act and should not go back on our promises that all people regardless of their abilities will be treated equally and given the same opportunities. Should we have kept great minds like Einstein and Abraham Lincoln from learning? They both had mental illnesses.
