There was a time when those in their late teens expected Mom & Dad to pitch in for a car; now it's a cell phone. Actually those a LOT younger have the percieved entitle ment; my 10yr old son an example. To which I reply like the Dad in a recent commercial fishing with his adolescent who states:"Dad, I think it's time I had a cell phone" - Dad:"I think it's time you got a job!" WHY do they feel thay have a God-given right to such things? It is a time honored reality that: to desire something requiring non-existent monetary resources, one must at least ATTEMPT to generate the funds themselves, NOT expect someone else(parents, etc.) to provide it to them! At this point the oft quoted "EVERYONE has them" response is usually trotted out; to which I reply "well, get THEIR parents to get one for you, or get the funds yourself. i.e.,WORK FOR IT!" This position usually results in the "your such irresponsible parents" look. So be it.
