I happened to see the Dr Sanjay Gupta Heart Disease special featuring Bill Clinton. Though Sanjay did have a bent towards prevention, the production was low on content and was than “lay fare” for dealing with this issue. This guy compliments himself in my opinion. Well, Sanjay brings on this quack doc from the Cleveland Clinic talking about blue zones in terms of diet for preventing heart disease. Very poor rationale. Though diet might be 50% of the issue. The other factors such as lifestyle and genetics etc were no mentioned. Stress, lack of exercise independent of lipid measures etc influence this. Endothelial function is actually more complex than we realize.
Another dangerous issue with the quack doc is that the studies were underpowered and not well designed to support his diet. Furthermore, there might be genetic issues with these zones where heart disease is less prevalent. Sanjay has us know his LDL is large! Gee Sanjay what else is large with you. . . LOL. . . Yes large LDL is more buoyant and less atherogenic but he tactfully did not mention triglycerides and HDL which are also considered. Overall, the production was low in content and promoting things without a clear presentation of the science for or against it.
