After 40 years of living with diabetes my endocrinologist just fired me. He worked with me for 20 months and saw me three weeks ago. Things appeared normal. He seemed a bit rushed. He did NOT upload my insulin pump data like he usually does. My A1C was down a little in the 8's which is good for me. I have periods of great blood sugars and short periods where my sugars go very high for no explicable reason. I received a form letter a week later stating my doctor would no longer be seeing me. I felt hurt and emotional. I could not believe he could or would do something like this without talking with me, or providing even a hint. Relationships take time to develop. My father was just diagnosed with Lymphoma and my mother needs caregivers with her. I have a lot more going on in my lie. I have to be doing a lot right to be where I am today. Patients have no recourse when a physician does something like this. Facebook has a group: My doctor fired me! I understand some patients are difficult and extremely frustrating to their physicians. Patients also need to feel safe and know they can trust and be open with their physicians. Unfortunately, many physicians feel challenged by educated proactive patients. Sadly, these patient firings are becoming all too common. I would like to see this issue brought up in the media. I can list five events that have happened outside of my control over the past month. Anyone would concur that these events are some of the most stressful life events. Of these, I feel most upset about my diabetes doctor getting rid of me. Finding a new doctor and establishing a relationship will never be the same as I shall always feel on edge, knowing this doctor could suddenly discharge me without providing a warning or reason. Certainly, diabetes has many issues itself. I feel I should be applauded for the efforts and achievements, not condemned and tortured. My former doctor ought to be invited on some ntiona news shows to be interviewed. I hurt and am looking for another diabetologist which is not easy.
