Web site offers evidence, tips for unsolved crimes
HILLSBORO, Ore. -- New technology is helping police track down criminals as ordinary citizens turn in tips and evidence 21st century style.
The Web site SwiftReport.net claims to be the first site of its kind where victims post unsolved crimes using text messages, PDAs, and a Web form.
After the information is sent to the police agency, clues to the crime are posted and available for other witnesses to leave tips.
According to developer Hadley Price, the site can accept voice messages too, which are then automatically converted into text. Agencies nationwide can participate.
It’s been a helpful tool for crimes like hit-and-run, thefts, graffiti, road-rage and drug activity. Designers said the site started as a hit-and-run reporting project in Hillsboro earlier this year.
