Penny and I met 20 years ago through work - she interviewed me for a spot on Weekend Today and then advised me to turn it down because it was strike replacement work. It was the first time I took her advice and not the last as we hopscotched from TV job to TV job - at the ill fated 'USA Today on TV' to GMA, Prime Time and 20/20. Though I knew her from work, we never talked about work. We talked about motherhood because as talented as Penny was as a producer, her heart and soul were at home with her girls, Abby and Emma. We dissected childcare options, the best cars for families(subaru outback, she said) balancing the crazy TV business with homework, playdates, recitals and soccer games. These discussions took place in the hallway because Penny never wasted a minute. Lunchtime was reserved for daily workouts - she took great care of herself - so that Penny could go home early enough to have dinner with her daughters who she loved so deeply. She was the best, the nicest, the smartest, the wisest - all the qualities that made her a great producer made her an extraordinary friend and most of all, mother. I join the many who will miss her.
